Can CBD Treat Anxiety and Depression?
Unlike THC, CBD does not produce an intoxicating effect. It does not stimulate the same receptors in the brain as THC, and therefore, does not impair daily functions. Moreover, the substance is legal in all 50 states, and is effective in treating various symptoms and conditions.
Some studies have suggested that CBD can help relieve anxiety and depression. It has been used successfully in treating post-traumatic stress disorder in children, and it can help combat insomnia. It has also shown antidepressant-like effects in animal studies. In fact, it is already being studied for treating anxiety disorders in humans.
CBD acts on various receptors, including the serotonin system, the glutamate system, and the alpha-1 adrenergic receptor. In addition, it is also known to lower blood sugar, regulate lipid uptake, and improve cholesterol levels. Further, it regulates blood pressure by inhibiting calcium transport across the membranes.
One study, carried out by Das et al., assessed 48 healthy volunteers for the treatment of anxiety triggered by anticipation of an electric shock. The participants received either pure CBD or a placebo. The results showed that 91 percent of the participants reported a reduction in their nightmares. In addition, the study indicated that CBD did not cause any side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, or dizziness.
In addition to these applications, CBD has also been shown to have some positive effects in treating other psychiatric disorders. For example, a study by European researchers found that patients with schizophrenia who received 1,000 milligrams of CBD per day had fewer hallucinations and less racing thoughts than patients given placebo. The study also showed that CBD helped patients with Crohn’s disease and inflammatory bowel disease. Additionally, it is being investigated for its potential to treat autism.
The FDA is cautious about the use of CBD, saying that it is not approved as a dietary supplement or food additive. Despite the fact that it is not an approved treatment for any disease, CBD can be purchased without a prescription. CBD is available in convenience stores nationwide and is gaining popularity as an alternative medicine for many medical conditions.
Researchers have also noted that CBD can interact with several medications. Because of this, CBD can interfere with the levels of antidepressants, antipsychotics, and blood thinners in the serum. Nevertheless, it is important to note that CBD is not as invasive as some other medications.
However, CBD is still unknown in terms of its long-term effects and potential for addiction. Therefore, more clinical trials must be conducted to determine whether or not it can affect the human body and how it reacts to co-morbid conditions. CBD should also be studied for its long-term effects and possible interaction with other substances.
In vitro studies have shown that CBD inhibits the formation of amyloid plaques. A study by Libro and colleagues showed that CBD inhibited GDK3b expression in mesenchymal stem cells, a central factor in AD pathogenesis.
